The Camp Lejuene Justice Act of 2021-22 and Why it Matters

117th Congress – Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2021-22

The Camp Lejuene Justice Act of 2021-22 and Why it MattersFor decades, Camp Lejeune in North Carolina served Military members and their spouses contaminated drinking water. In the 1980’s, testing was finally administered on site that found toxic chemicals in the drinking water that was 300x over acceptable levels. When the water contamination was investigated, it found that multiple businesses nearby were dumping chemicals (cleaning supplies, laundry chemicals etc.) into the street and drains that were ultimately flushed into the water feeding into Camp Lejeune.

Years after the water was deemed toxic, military members and their families whom lived on base during the 30 year stint (1950s – 1980s) started to experience birthing issues, cancer, kidney issues and more, which were linked back to the same chemicals found in that water. Because the VA doesn’t allow claims that are 10+ years in the making, Veterans were denied care. After investigation into the toxic chemicals, including looking at hundreds of claims regarding Camp Lejeune’s water effects on Veterans, a bill was brought into Congress called the Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2021 (now looking to pass in 2022) to help Veterans and their families recover just compensation.

What Does the Camp Lejeune Justice Act Mean for Me?

The Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2021, now called
Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022, was originally brought into the picture to help Veterans recover money for damages incurred by drinking toxic water that the VA wouldn’t cover. In January of 2022, the bill was passed through the House of Representatives and is currently awaiting it’s final passage. As the Camp Lejeune Justice Act is in its final stage, the bill is expected to help award 7 billion to Military Veterans and their spouses who were on base for at least 30 days during August 1st, 1953 and December 31st, 1987 so long as any Veteran and their spouse can prove residence on base during that time and have sufficient evidence to prove that their current condition has a causal relationship to Camp Lejeune’s contaminated drinking water.
