Orianna Health Systems, a nursing home management company, has recently fallen on hard times. In the past 4 years, the company’s overall expenses have spiked and have seen an increase that is greater than that of the company’s revenue. Paired with a simultaneous decrease in occupancy, the company is experiencing financial difficulty and many wonder how these new financial challenges will affect its ability to provide service to residents and their families.
However, this is not the first time Orianna Health Systems’ skilled nursing facilities have come under scrutiny. With multiple facilities in Anderson, Greenville, and Pickens counties, the company has serviced thousands of aging adults and been hit with its fair share of complaints, unflattering inspection reports, and lawsuits, according to reports.
In the past 7 years, the company’s facilities have been sued more than 30 times and been the subject of at least 65 police reports. Orianna Health Systems has been sued by multiple families and alleged to have been at least partly responsible for the deaths of multiple residents. The company has paid almost $4.5 million in settlements. In 2016, an inspection of one of Orianna’s rehabilitation and skilled nursing centers revealed deficiencies in safety measures to prevent falls and injuries, food safety, hospice care for at least one resident, and adherence to dietary limitations and instructions.
Not all Orianna Health Systems facilities exhibit such deficiencies, per inspection results. Several facilities, including Linley Park Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center and River Falls Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, continue to receive high ratings from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Others continue to score above average.
