Nandhina Lance, a former employee of SweetGrass Court Assisted Living in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, was fired in March of 2017 after she and another employee used their cell phones to video themselves hurling insults at 2 female residents. The videos were uploaded to Snapchat and shared with countless other people, adding public humiliation to verbal demoralization.
One of the recipients of this abuse was an 82-year-old resident with Alzheimer’s, Betty Dick, who was not entirely clothed while she was being recorded on video. In the published videos, Lance and the other staff member were recorded telling the woman that “she is stupid and her mother is stupid,” and saying not to touch her, “because she ha[d] bodily fluid on her hands.” When asked by police why they did this, the 2 women explained themselves by saying they thought it was funny.
SC Assisted Living Company Hit with Lawsuits for Negligence and Wrongful Death
Dick’s family is suing Five Star Senior Living, the parent company to SweetGrass Court. The family is going after the company with allegations of fraud and negligence, claiming that they were told Dick would be given quality care during her stay at SweetGrass Court, which she apparently did not receive at the hands of Lance and the other employee.
The other patient developed a stomach ulcer soon after and suffered a number of other debilitating injuries as a result, which sent her on a downward spiral and led ultimately to her death. The patient’s family is also suing Five Star Senior Living, alleging that the company and the employees in question are directly responsible for their loved one’s wrongful death.
