As experienced attorneys, we know the devastating effects bullying can have on children and their families. The case of 14-year-old Kelaia Turner is a heartbreaking example of how unchecked harassment can lead to unimaginable pain and suffering. At Christian & Christian Law, we are committed to helping families like Kelaia’s seek the justice and healing they deserve.
Kelaia’s Story
Kelaia’s life changed forever after enduring relentless bullying at her South Carolina middle school. The bullying escalated to the point where, at just 12 years old, Kelaia attempted suicide. Her mother, Ty Turner, found her in time to save her life, but Kelaia spent 101 days in the hospital, including 31 in the intensive care unit (ICU). She suffered severe brain damage and now requires round-the-clock care.
What makes this story even more tragic is what happened during her recovery. While Kelaia was in the ICU, a fellow student visited her. Instead of offering kindness, the student took photos of Kelaia in her vulnerable state and shared them on social media. The images were accompanied by cruel rumors, further deepening the emotional wounds for Kelaia and her family.
Allegations of Negligence
The lawsuit filed by Kelaia’s parents names Greenville County Schools, her teacher Olivia Bennett, and other administrators as defendants. The suit claims these parties failed to protect Kelaia despite repeated complaints about the bullying. According to the lawsuit, Kelaia’s teacher not only ignored the harassment but also participated in it by pointing to Kelaia when students mocked her, calling her names like “roach.”
In another shocking incident, students in a separate classroom played an offensive song targeting Black people, and the teacher reportedly took no action to stop it. Kelaia’s parents made numerous attempts to address these issues with the school, but they say their concerns were ignored.
Seeking Justice
Kelaia’s parents are now fighting for accountability and justice. They want to ensure no other child experiences the pain their daughter endured. “We are fighting for Kelaia’s healing and well-being every day, believing that her story can inspire others,” her mother shared.
The school district has responded by denying the allegations, stating that all reports of bullying were addressed according to their policies. However, the Turner family’s lawsuit highlights the systemic failures that allowed the bullying to persist.
