At Christian & Christian Law, we have dedicated our practice to standing up for those who cannot stand for themselves. One of the most heartbreaking cases we’ve encountered recently involves a young girl, just 12 years old at the time, whose life was forever changed due to relentless bullying at school. This tragic story is a reminder of the dire consequences of unchecked harassment and the importance of holding institutions accountable when they fail to protect the vulnerable.
A Family’s Nightmare: The Story of Kelaia Turner
Kelaia Turner was a bright and vivacious student at Dr. Phinnize J. Fisher Middle School in Greenville County. Like many her age, she was navigating the challenges of growing up, but her journey was made unbearable by bullying. According to a lawsuit filed by her family, Kelaia endured physical assaults and cruel taunts from her peers, who called her dehumanizing names like “roach” and “man.” Her mother, Ty Turner, believes the bullying began when Kelaia started wearing her natural hair to school—a beautiful representation of her identity that unfortunately became a target for ridicule.
Ty Turner reached out to the school no less than seven to nine times, providing documentation of her concerns. Despite her efforts, she claims the school’s responses were either dismissive or nonexistent. The inaction of faculty and staff, combined with the continued harassment, created a toxic environment for Kelaia.

On March 17, 2023, the Turner family’s world was shattered. That evening, Ty found her 12-year-old daughter hanging from a belt in her bedroom. Paramedics arrived to a scene no parent should ever witness. Kelaia was cold to the touch, with no pulse or heartbeat detectable. For eight excruciating minutes, she was clinically dead.
Miraculously, a paramedic detected a faint pulse after Ty prayed fervently, clinging to her faith. Kelaia was revived, but the damage was done. She spent weeks in a coma and remained hospitalized for 101 days. Today, Kelaia’s life is drastically different. She is nonverbal, requires a feeding tube, and depends on round-the-clock care from her parents and a part-time nurse. The once vibrant child is now confined to a wheelchair, unable to control her own body.
Seeking Accountability: The Lawsuit
The Turner family has taken legal action against Greenville County Schools, accusing the district of negligence in handling the bullying. They allege that the school failed to protect Kelaia, ignored multiple reports of harassment, and allowed the situation to escalate unchecked. The family also claims that some teachers not only failed to intervene but were complicit in the bullying, standing by as Kelaia endured verbal abuse in their presence.
The school district has denied these allegations, stating that they investigated the complaints and implemented anti-bullying strategies. However, the family’s lawsuit paints a different picture—one of systemic failure and disregard for a child’s safety.
A Call to Action: The Need for Change
This case is a sobering reminder of the devastating impact bullying can have on young lives. As attorneys, we recognize the need to advocate for systemic change to ensure schools are safe environments for all children. Bullying is not just a phase or a rite of passage—it is a form of abuse with life-altering consequences.
For parents, this case underscores the importance of vigilance. If you suspect your child is being bullied, document everything—emails, phone calls, and any communications with school officials. Advocate fiercely for your child’s safety, and if the school fails to act, seek legal counsel to explore your options.
Faith and Resilience: A Family’s Journey Forward
Despite their immense challenges, the Turner family has demonstrated extraordinary resilience. Ty Turner, a deeply spiritual woman, continues to hold on to her faith, believing in her daughter’s eventual recovery. “They say all you need is faith the size of a mustard seed,” Ty said. “I have way more than that.”
The family has launched fundraising efforts, including a GoFundMe campaign, to help with mounting medical expenses and the purchase of a wheelchair-accessible van. While no amount of money can undo the harm done to Kelaia, these efforts aim to improve her quality of life and support her ongoing therapy.
