Missouri Court Orders Johnson & Johnson to Pay $4.7B
A group of 22 women has claimed that repeated use of talc-based baby powder (created by Johnson & Johnson) is the source of their ovarian cancer.
The women claim that the baby powder contains asbestos, a known carcinogen. Despite company representatives’ adamant claims that the baby powder does not contain asbestos, the St. Louis Circuit Court is requiring Johnson & Johnson to pay $550 million to compensate for the plaintiffs’ cancer-related costs and more than $4 billion for their pain and suffering.
Talc, Asbestos, and Chemical Testing Practices
The company has claimed that talc, the mineral used to make baby powder, is thoroughly purified and safe for human use. However, the women in the case claim the company’s testing techniques are inadequate and that asbestos, which is chemically similar to talc in some ways and naturally occurs in close geographic proximity to talc, cannot be completely removed from the final product.
As a result of their attorneys’ skillful argumentation, in-depth research, and effective handling of their case, all the affected women were able to access the compensation they needed in order to afford the consequences of the company’s negligent testing practices.
Johnson & Johnson continues to deny that its baby powder product contains asbestos or causes cancer and maintains that its testing practices effectively rid the final product of cancer-causing toxins. The company claims the case was “fundamentally unfair” and intends to appeal the court’s decision.
